09 May Barents Sea cod with poor fishing prospects
According to scientific forecasts, in 2022 there will be around 180,000 tonnes less cod. This is the conclusion drawn by the scientific information requested by Russia and Norway, the countries that co-manage the Barents Sea.
In 2021, the TAC (Total Allowable Catch) has increased by 885,600 tonnes. 20% more than in 2019. The opinion of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) recommends about 708,480 tons by 2022. The scientific assessment estimated that the biomass, although still at a level was decreasing Recruitments were about half of the peak mining years of 2007 and 2008.
As for haddock, the other white fish most caught in the Barents Sea, a TAC of 232,527 tonnes is proposed. It will also mean a decline from 232,527 tonnes in 2021 to 180,003 tonnes in 2022.
It will certainly mean a better and more equitable allocation of quotas. And why not, learn how to make better use of and optimize the resources of the sea. The concept of sustainability has spread very widely, but on a practical level there is still a long way to go. Taking advantage of all parts of the fish reduces the need to fish and therefore the fishing pressure. At Iberland Green we try to ensure that most of the products we work with are not subject to fishing, but a consequence of it. Thus, with our activity we contribute to reducing fishing demand, optimizing all the fish that have important applications for the industry. More information on our website.
